Whales

Western Australia has one of the work’s longest whale-watching seasons and it starts off the coast of Esperance.  Humpback and Southern Right Whales cruise along the coast.  Paddle boarders have recorded a unique encounter up close and personal with whales that come near to the shore. Watch the whales as they swim along the continental shelf, hugging the coastline moving from nutrient rich cool waters to the warmer waters of breeding grounds on the northwest coastline. Bring your binoculars to a vantage point or viewing tower along the coast. Or, jump aboard one of the many whale watching cruises available to get nearer to the breaching and tail-slapping action from May to October.

Climb aboard the ‘Southern Niche’ and enjoy a commentary on the town’s history as you cruise through Lovers’ Cove, West Beach and Blue Haven. Esperance Island Cruises offer amazing wildlife cruises around the Recherche Archipelago, also referred to as the Bay of Isles.

History

Reminders of the courageous Dutch, French and British who passed by, landed and later explored the south coast are etched in names across maps of the area.  But it was the intrepid whalers, sealers, pirates, pastoralists and miners who shaped the settlement of Esperance.  The Esperance Jetty connects the ocean to the land, a transit point for goods and a traffic way for extraordinary stories.

Immerse yourself in the stories of centuries and more recent past at The Esperance Museum.  Navigation charts reveal the reality of the possibility that Australia could have been under French governance.

Marvel at the link with NASA’s ‘Skylab’ and the collection of pieces that were scattered along the Esperance coast after it crash landed in the ocean.  See these on display.
